Chicago Public School Trends

For public school demographic and performance metrics, Illinois Report Card is the one-stop definitive data source to refer to. What I like the most about this site is the data completeness, and my least favorite thing is how it does not show how key metrics have changed over time and its long loading time. The good news is that some key historic metrics can be found elsewhere online (see here and here).

As an Asian parent, I care about how many Asian classmates my kid will have in his class. Since elementary school is 6-8 years, I also care whether the school’s academic quality has been improving or declining in recent years. To answer these questions, in the webapp, I summarized CPS school’s demographic composition and student’s math and English proficiency trend.

For a more detailed visualization on academic proficiency with cohort level granularity, see here and related pdf in that repo.

Findings:

  • There is an all-across-the-broad drop in academic performance due to covid online education.
  • For good selective enrollment schools like Keller and Skinner North, Asian population doubled over 10 years.
  • For Skinner West, there is a steady decline in academic performance over the last 10 years.
