One thing I used to find myself doing quite often is checking the commute time from work to different locations near evening rush hours. I was doing so to get better informed on travel time for my next home purchase. Checking this on phone requires a lot of typing and button clicks, so why not automate it?
Starting from May 2025, I used crontab and some python script to collect real time google map travel time between some CPS schools and my wife’s and my office buildings. Over a year’s time, I have the commute time from schools to work in morning rush hours and the other direction in evening rush hours. Using these data, I made a webpage plotting how commute time look for different routes, at different time of the day, on different weekdays, for different seasons.
To me, the biggest finding is how much of an impact I90’s construction ending has on travel time during evening hours. Select CME as starting point and BELL as destination to see for yourself.
